Sealants are a thin flowable filling material that prevent bacteria and food from lodging in the cracks and crevices of teeth, particularly back teeth that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush and floss.
This cavity prevention technique is especially effective in children. We recommend applying sealants as soon as adult molars appear, typically between five to seven years of age. It is important to note that sealants do not take the place of conscientious at-home preventative dental care. Both children and adults should brush and floss their teeth at least twice daily, ideally after meals. Rinsing with an anti-cavity mouthwash after brushing helps to further prevent cavities.
